General Questions
1. What is an Amazon Fulfillment Center?
An Amazon Fulfillment Center (FC) is a large, organized warehouse where Amazon stores products for sellers and manages the complete order process. When sellers send inventory through FBA, Amazon receives the stock, scans it, stores it safely, and keeps it ready for fast delivery. As soon as a customer places an order, the FC team picks, packs, and ships the product. These centers also handle returns and replacements. In short, an FC acts as Amazon’s main hub for storage, order processing, and quick customer delivery.
2. How does inventory reach the Fulfillment Center?
Create an FBA Shipment Plan: The seller logs into Seller Central, selects the products, and creates a shipment plan based on Amazon’s assigned Fulfillment Center.
Label and Prepare Products: Each unit is labeled with an FNSKU barcode, and items are packed following Amazon’s strict packaging and safety guidelines.
Schedule Delivery or Pick-Up: The seller either books an appointment to deliver the goods directly or uses an Amazon-partnered carrier service for pickup.
Shipment Received at FC: Once the shipment reaches the FC, Amazon’s team receives, scans, and verifies the products.
Inventory Stored and Activated: After successful check-in, the items are placed in storage bins and become active for customer orders on Amazon.
3. Can sellers choose a specific FC?
Amazon Auto-Assigns the FC: In most cases, Amazon automatically assigns a Fulfillment Center based on product demand, location, and available space. Sellers generally cannot manually pick a specific FC.
Limited Flexibility: Sometimes, Amazon may allow FC preference through special programmes or operational needs, but this is not guaranteed.
Programs That Offer Some Control: Options like SmartConnect, Seller Flex, and Inventory Transfer (IXD) may give sellers partial flexibility in where their inventory is stored.
Final Decision by Amazon: Even with preferences, Amazon has the final say to maintain fast delivery and balanced storage across its network.
4. What types of products are allowed in FCs?
Most FBA-Eligible Products Allowed: Standard items like electronics, clothing, accessories, home products, beauty items, toys, and daily-use goods are accepted in most Fulfillment Centers.
Regulated Categories Require Approval: Products such as cosmetics, supplements, food items, and health-related goods need proper approvals like FSSAI, brand authorization, or category approval.
Restricted or Prohibited Products: Hazardous materials, illegal items, expired food, lithium batteries (in some FCs), and items violating Amazon’s policies are not allowed.
Size & Weight Restrictions: Extremely heavy, oversized, or fragile items may be limited depending on FC capacity and safety rules.
5. How is storage space allocated inside FCs?
Based on Sales Performance: Amazon reviews your recent sales trends to decide how much storage space your products require. Higher sales usually mean higher storage allocation.
Inventory Health Matters: If you have slow-moving or excess inventory, Amazon may reduce your available storage to avoid congestion inside the FC.
Category & Product Type: Different product categories have different space limits depending on demand and storage conditions.
Monthly/Weekly Updates: Storage limits are updated regularly—often every 4 weeks—to match your business activity.
Shown in Restock Dashboard: Sellers can view their available space and limits inside the Restock Inventory dashboard.
6. What is the processing time after stock reaches the FC?
Initial Receiving Time: Once your shipment arrives at the Fulfillment Center, Amazon’s team begins unloading, scanning, and verifying the products.
Standard Processing: Most shipments are fully checked in within 1–3 business days, depending on workload and product type.
Peak Season Delay: During high-demand periods like Prime Day, festivals, or sales events, processing may take longer due to heavy inbound volume.
Product Category Impact: Fragile, oversized, or special-handling items may require extra time for inspection.
Activation: After successful check-in, your inventory becomes available for sale immediately.
7. Is inventory saleable while being transferred inside Amazon FCs?
Inventory Status Changes: When Amazon moves your stock between Fulfillment Centers, the units show as “Reserved” in your inventory dashboard.
Not Fully Saleable: During the transfer process, the units are not immediately available for customer orders until they reach the destination FC.
Transfer Time: Inter-FC transfers usually take a few days, depending on distance and FC workload.
Automatic Activation: Once the stock is received and scanned at the new FC, it becomes active and saleable again.
No Action Needed: Amazon handles the entire movement automatically—no extra steps needed from the seller.
8. How do customer returns get processed?
Return Shipment to FC: When a customer initiates a return, the item is sent back to the Fulfillment Center that originally shipped the order or a designated return consolidation center.
Inspection & Verification: Amazon’s team checks the product’s condition to confirm whether it is unused, damaged, or incomplete.
Restock or Dispose:
If the item is in good, sellable condition, it is returned to inventory.
If damaged, Amazon may dispose of it or return it to the seller (if requested).
Customer Refund: Amazon handles the refund or replacement as per its return policy.
9. How do removal orders work from FCs?
Initiate from Seller Central: Sellers can create a removal order directly from the Manage FBA Inventory page by selecting the product and choosing “Create Removal Order.”
Two Options Available:
Return to Seller: Amazon ships the units back to the seller’s address.
Disposal: Amazon disposes of the unsellable or excess units on request.
Processing Time: Removal orders generally take 7–14 days, depending on FC workload and location.
Charges Apply: Amazon charges a per-unit removal or disposal fee.
Status Tracking: Sellers can track removal progress in the Removal Order Details report.
10. What fees apply for storage and order handling?
Monthly Storage Fees: Charged based on the amount of space your products occupy in the Fulfillment Center. Rates depend on size tier (standard/oversize) and season (higher during October–December).
Fulfillment Fees: A per-unit fee that covers picking, packing, shipping, and customer service. This is the main FBA fee.
Weight Handling Fee: Based on product weight and size; applied when Amazon ships the order.
Optional Service Fees: May include labeling fees, prep fees, long-term storage fees, and disposal/removal fees.
All fees visible in: FBA Fee Preview and Payments Report in Seller Central.
11. Who takes responsibility for damages inside FCs?
Amazon is responsible for any damage that happens inside Amazon Fulfillment Centers (FCs).
This includes damage during:
Receiving
Storing
Handling
Packing
Shipping (if using FBA shipping)
If a unit is damaged by Amazon, they will:
Reimburse you OR
Replace the item with an equivalent one
You must open a case in Seller Central to claim reimbursement.
Amazon may require proof of cost, such as:
Invoice
Purchase order
Damage due to poor packaging by the seller before sending to Amazon is not Amazon’s responsibility.
12. How to check stock movement inside FCs?
You can track stock movement using Amazon Seller Central.
Go to Inventory → FBA Inventory to see current stock levels.
For detailed movement, open Reports → Fulfillment.
Use these three key reports:
Inventory Event Detail Report
Shows inbound, outbound, adjustments, damages, lost items, etc.
Inventory Adjustments Report
Shows if Amazon added, removed, lost, damaged, or found stock.
Inventory Ledger Report
Complete timeline of SKU-wise movement inside FCs.
These reports provide unit-by-unit tracking for:
Received inventory
Transfers between FCs
Customer orders
Returns
Damages
Lost stock
You can also download reports and analyze stock flow in Excel.
Helps to identify missing units and claim reimbursements if needed.
13. Is GST involved in FC transfers?
No, GST is not involved when Amazon transfers your inventory from one Fulfillment Center (FC) to another. Here’s why:
FC-to-FC movement is not a sale, it is only a logistical transfer done by Amazon to balance stock across locations.
Since there is no sale or supply, no GST is charged on this movement.
Sellers do not need to generate any GST invoice or e-way bill for these transfers — Amazon handles all internal logistics.
The transfer does not affect your GST return, because there is no taxable transaction involved.
You will see the quantity movement in your Amazon inventory reports, but there is no GST entry connected to it.
GST becomes applicable only when the item is sold to a customer, not while shifting stock inside Amazon’s network.
You also don’t need separate GST registration for each FC just because stock is moved there (except in special categories where mandatory registration is required, which Amazon notifies separately).
14. Can sellers download invoices for transfers and shipments?
Sellers can download invoices only for actual customer orders, but not for internal stock movements. Here’s the detailed breakdown:
1. Customer Shipments (Sale Orders) – YES
-
Sellers can download GST invoices, shipping labels, and tax documents for every customer order.
-
These are available in Orders → Manage Orders or the Tax Document Library.
2. FC-to-FC Transfers – NO
-
When Amazon moves your stock from one Fulfillment Center to another, no invoice is generated.
-
This is because it is not a sale, just an internal logistical movement.
-
You only get inventory movement reports, not invoices.
3. Inbound Shipments (Seller → Amazon FC) – NO GST Invoice
-
You can download shipment labels, packing lists, and carton labels.
-
But Amazon does not provide GST invoices, because you are sending your own stock.
4. Removal Orders (Amazon FC → Seller) – NO
-
Amazon does not issue invoices for removals or disposals.
-
Only fee statements and removal summaries are available.
15. What should sellers ensure before sending stock to FCs?
GST registration is active
Products have proper labeling (FNSKU)
Packaging follows Amazon requirements
No compliance issues with listing or category
